Description

These are completely intact, including the soles, heels, and insoles. At the time they were made, they would have been classified specifically as work shoes, which is evidenced by the pegs in the outsoles, however their appearance makes them suitable as dress shoes by today's standards, and their condition is nice enough that they would pair very well with a formal ensemble.
Both heels have two pegs each, and have been originally crafted, to prevent the rest of the sole, which is crafted from leather, from wearing down. The insoles are also made of very soft leather, and are still securely stitched into the uppers.
The uppers on these are genuine kangaroo hide at the vamp and quarters, and are stamped as such on the inner edge of the ankle. They have a reinforced cap toe that appears to be calf, with double stitching attaching both the toe caps and quarters to the vamp. The laces bind up with six eyelets at the lower, and four hooks at the upper, and I believe the laces may be original to these shoes, but if they are not, the wider woven flat design is true to period.
They have been stored with metal adjustable stretchers in place to retain shape, although these will not be included with the shoes upon purchase.
As previously mentioned, the inside edge of the ankle is stamped, reflecting that the leather used for production is genuine kangaroo hide, which was not entirely uncommon during the late Victorian and Edwardian period. The texture is very much like kid leather, and these have been properly stored and well preserved, resulting in an excellent example if used as a display piece, or a comfortable option for high class attire.
Kangaroo leather was used often as a more expensive option, as it softened much more than other animal skins, but was more durable than goat skin. It was sometimes also marketed as an option for "tender feet
