Leather boots made in Italy by Vasque.
Designed by Yvon Chouinard in 1975-1976 as a combined climbing and hiking boot. At that time, nothing like them existed. Boots were either heavy-duty for hiking, or soft and supple for rock climbing. Chouinard's unique design combined the best elements of both.
These are pre-Patagonia Chouinard climbing boots. They are the first generation of what are now called "approach shoes", allowing one boot to be used for both hiking and technical rock climbing. They are stylish enough for casual wear around town.
These revolutionary boots were called "Shoenards" in the 1978 Great Pacific Iron Works catalog.
The Great Pacific Iron Works was Yvon Chouinard and Tom Frost's mountain climbing equipment company in Ventura, California. Patagonia clothing was originally part of the GPIW, but later became an independent company.
The GPIW was sold to its employees in the late 1980's, and renamed Black Diamond.
